Where to Trek Mountain Gorillas in Uganda 2021?
Uganda gorilla tours are best conducted only in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Treks to see mountain gorillas in Uganda are only possible in anyone of the two parks and they are situated in Southwestern Uganda, about 9-10 hours’ drive from Entebbe or Kampala capital city and 3-4 hours’ drive from Kigali capital city. Out of 1063 mountain gorillas which today still live on planet earth, about half of them are confined in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park thus making Uganda one of the premier gorilla trekking safari destinations in Africa.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park was gazetted in 1991 and its establishment was primarily to host a section of endangered mountain gorillas. Today, Bwindi offers refuge to about 459 mountain gorillas. It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 given its ecological biodiversity. This park sits in an area of 331sq.kms and comprises of 4 gorilla trekking sectors; Rushaga and Nkuringo in the South, Ruhija in the East and Buhoma in the North. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is currently comprised of 20 habituated gorilla families and they include Rushegura, Bweza, Katwe, Nkuringo, Oruzogo, Bitukura, Rwingi, Mukiza, Bushaho, Bikingi, Busingye, Kahungye, Mishaya, Mubare, Christmas, Kutu, Habinyanja, Nshongi, Kyaguriro and Mucunguzi.
Aside from mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park also offers refuge to other wildlife species including olive baboons, chimpanzees, over 350 bird species including the Great blue turacos, African green broadbill, bar tailed trogon, black breasted barbets, standard winged nightjar, Chapin’s flycatcher, fine banded woodpecker, regal sunbird, Kivu ground thrush; elephants, red tailed monkeys, vervet monkeys, forest duikers, black and white colobus monkeys.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established in 1991 with main aim to protect mountain gorillas. The park occupies an area of 33.7sq.kms making it Uganda’s smallest national park. It takes its name from Gahinga Volcano and currently, it has Nyakagezi gorilla family which is open for trekking and Hirwa that moved from Volcanoes National Park. How to access Bwindi and Mgahinga National Parks 2021
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are reachable by road or by air. By road, the number of hours you cover may depend on the route you take and speed of your safari guide. However, your journey can begin from Entebbe/Kampala through Mbarara and this may cover 8-9 hours. If you are starting your Uganda gorilla tours from Queen Elizabeth National Park, you may spend about 3 to 4 hours to drive to Buhoma sector in the Northern side of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Also, from Kampala to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you will cover about 510kms or drive from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park through Rushaga and Nkuringo the southern sectors of Bwindi about 14kms, approximately 4 hours’ drive to Mgahinga National Park.
By air, you can fly from Entebbe Airport or Kajjansi airfield to Kihihi/Kayonza airfield then drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Or fly to Kisoro airfield then drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
